Northern Mockingbird, Mimus polyglottos
From dawn to dusk and sometimes all through the night, the Northern Mockingbird croons a steady, rapid stream of hundreds of bird songs, interspersed with occasional barking dog and chirping cricket imitations. Its Latin name means “mimic of many tongues”. Fiercely territorial, mockingbirds will attack crows, grackles, and even cats during mating season. This ground feeder forages in foliage and short grass for insects, grasshoppers, spiders, and fruit. (Field Guide to Backyard Birds of the South, 2008)
