The Scaly-breasted Munia, (formally known as the Nutmeg Mannikin) is an Asian species that has been in the aviculture (pet bird) trade. During Hurricane Ivan, two breeders left their birds in outdoor aviaries and the birds escaped into the local environment. In addition, it is believed that others escaped from the annual bird exposition that is held at the Pensacola Fairgrounds. Scaly-breasted Munias are highly social and typically stick together in very tight groups. They have been in our area and successfully breeding on their own for 15 years. Even though they are not a native species, it is likely they are now here to stay.
